Today I noticed that in 4th gear, which is the only gear I was able to test climbing the hills where I live, running between 35 accelerating the tach is seriously obviously jerky but the sound of the motor isn't and doesn't seem to match what the tach does. It runs at 66 amps with nothing on and 45 amps with lights/heater/stereo. Its pushing 14.15 volts but the amperage number doesn't seem right to me. I decided to take it by a shop and have the alternator tested. Now the problem is that it chugs, the lights do dim and such when I turn the heater on or rear defroster. My lights don't flicker as bad and it doesn't almost stall. I removed the fuse and it made the problem better. I used to have an amp and sub in the car and had taken them out quite some time ago but forgot to remove the fuse for the power wire so it had arched in the trunk. I thought I found the problem which was me being blonde. My lights would randomly flash and the car would sputter. Now the past couple days I've been having some all of a sudden weird issues. Basically, from what I've read it seems like everything under the sun can cause this. I've been unable to find a true answer for what can cause this. After checking all the data I was told about the advanced timing only being at 14 degrees advanced and from the research I've done that's not right. I decided to take it to a friend of mines shop who has a scan/monitoring tool. I didn't get a whole lot of difference afterward. Nothing major enough to throw a code so I changed the plugs and wires. So I'll start at the beginning.Ī few weeks ago I noticed that it was running a bit rough at idle. My biggest issues is that I can't pinpoint the exact problem and can't afford to drop a lot of money on repairs. I've had some problems the past few weeks and it seems the car has been bipolar the last 3 days. I have a 98 sl2 obviously with 185k miles.
